Abstract The talk will argue that for a majority of scientists in this field a great future awaits if a collective attack is launched against societal problems. The inter-institutional group is a very welcome development especially since it is informal. We need to recognize that instead of being proud, possessive and presumptuous, it would benefit everyone to be polite, prudent, and proactive.

Organizer's note: A few organisations in Pune – specifically, SPPU SCMS and Statistics, IISER Data Science, and FLAME Computer Science departments – are starting an informal Data Science Colloquia Series. These talks will typically be held every first Thursday of the month and the venue will vary between these departments. The present talk is the inaugural talk of this series.
